**Malaika (Mah-lie-kah) noun:

1. Angel in Swahili

MALAIKA FOR LIFE™ is a network of angels, JUST LIKE YOU, who have helped save lives and empower vulnerable communities ONE bracelet at a time.

What we do: In partnership with Hope Through Opportunity and University of Miami Hyperion Council, MALAIKA FOR LIFE™, provides malaria relief and empowers vulnerable communities through the sale of African produced bracelets.

Our Vision: To provide malaria relief and education; to empower vulnerable communities; and to mobilize organizations, schools, companies and communities to collaborate to reach our goal of ending malaria deaths.

Full circle: At MALAIKA FOR LIFE™ we are passionate about creating a full circle approach for those we serve. Each bracelet provides income for the crucial malaria medication and helps sustain a viable income for the women who create our bracelets.

How it works: MALAIKA FOR LIFE™ purchases
 bracelets
from
 Tamiha,
an
 organization
that
assists
widows
 and
women with HIV/AIDS by providing income opportunities and job skills so that they can support themselves and their families. Most families in this region survive on less than a dollar a day.

  • The program consists of up to 60 women who rely on bracelet making as their main source of income.
  • The women are given micro-financing, business and financial skills.
  • Each woman has her own bank account, in which, she manages her earnings and invests in education and health care for her family.
  • Each woman retains 70% of all bracelet sales at cost, allowing her to send her children to school and provide for her family. The remaining 30% returns to Tamiha to fund their orphanage and vocational school.

By providing malaria medication we are achieving the following:

1) MALAIKA FOR LIFE™ alleviates the social and economic burden on vulnerable communities.

  • The majority of hospitals in Tanzania are understocked with malaria medication. In high malaria season, this results in many deaths as victims are unable to have access to immediate and effective treatment.
  • Often times, malaria fatalities result from the inability to pay for the proper medication and their subsequent efforts to self-medicate with traditional remedies.
  • By
providing
medication at no cost to vulnerable communities, we remove this burden and allow families to save money, send their children to school and provide food and shelter.

2) MALAIKA FOR LIFE™ alleviates the economic and social burden on local hospitals that operate at a deficit so that they can redirect their resources more effectively.

  • On average, malaria accounts for 30% of all hospital costs, more than HIV/AIDS.
